An inclusive play area for the school and a vibrant neighbourhood

An inclusive playground has been created in Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld, linking the school and the local neighbourhood. Clearly structured play areas, accessible entrances and a colour-coded guidance system provide a space for children with and without disabilities to play.

hochkant has completely renovated and designed the playground on Rappoltsweilerstraße in the Friedrichsfeld district of Mannheim to be inclusive. Four clearly defined areas – a play cube tower, a swing set, a sandpit and the weather-protected ‘play barn’ – offer a wide range of activities. Barrier-free access and clear colour contrasts make it easier for children with disabilities to find their way around and encourage them to play together. Elements made of larch, acrylic glass and stainless steel, as well as the complete planning and fabrication, were all provided by a single source. The opening marked the creation of Mannheim’s first playground designed to be consistently inclusive.
