Climbing from cocoon to cocoon at GaLa Ellwangen

Architecturally designed caterpillar-shaped cocoons, linked by a varied climbing course: the play area in Ellwangen combines sophisticated design with bespoke craftsmanship to create a unique space for children to play and explore.

For the State Garden Show in Ellwangen, hochkant created an extraordinary play structure centred on the theme of caterpillar cocoons. Several architecturally designed, geometric cocoons are connected by a varied climbing course, inviting children to explore, balance and climb. The construction and structural engineering of the cocoons – which were thought through down to the smallest detail and crafted with great care – presented a particular challenge. Ropes and nets, hand-knotted on site and individually tailored, blend into the structure and create a wide range of opportunities for movement. The result is an exciting space that combines design, craftsmanship and play.
The design concept originated from a landscape architecture firm. hochkant GmbH developed the implementation and production plans based on this and carried out the project with its own construction and installation team, initially in the workshop and finally on site.
