Experience castle-building at Wartburg Castle

A castle construction site modelled on historical examples was created outside the walls of Wartburg Castle. The aim of the project was to bring medieval crafts such as stonemasonry, carpentry and blacksmithing to life.

Hochkant crafted transport equipment, furniture and workshops from solid oak, complementing these with tools faithfully reproduced in their original form. The assembly process was logistically challenging: beams weighing up to 280 kilograms had to be moved through a gate just 99 centimetres wide and transported over a distance of 600 metres, before being positioned with precision. Only a mini-excavator and a dumper were used, supported by extensive manual labour.
The result is seven themed stations that combine knowledge and experience, providing a realistic insight into the working methods of medieval castle construction.
