Rappbode Dam Pedestrian suspension bridge

The longest pedestrian suspension bridge of its kind was opened after around ten months of construction. Spanning 458 metres, the structure now stretches across the valley next to the Rappbode Dam at a height of approximately 100 metres.

The gently swaying bridge is accessible to everyone; no additional safety equipment is required. The only requirement for crossing is sturdy footwear. The walkway has a consistent width of 1.20 metres and is lined with a 1.30-metre-high railing enclosed by a stainless steel mesh.

For visitors seeking an extra adrenaline rush alongside the dizzying height experience of crossing the bridge, a sensational attraction is available. Using the ‘Giga-Swing’, the daring can let themselves fall in ‘free fall’ some 75 metres down and swing across the valley. Here, they have the choice of experiencing this alone or as a tandem jump.

Working closely with the clients Stefan and Maik Berke (Harzdrenalin UG), we acted as the lead designer for the entire project over a two-year period. The main focus of our work on the bridge structure was on structural design, liaising with the specialist contractors, and construction coordination and supervision. As for the Giga-Swing, we also took care of the installation and the training of the instructors.

During the ten-month construction period, HTB Baugesellschaft m.b.H. (main contractor) used 148 cubic metres of concrete and 25 tonnes of reinforcing steel. The enormous tensile forces of the bridge, totalling 947 tonnes, are countered by a total of 48 tension and compression anchors, which were sunk up to 27 metres into the ground. The total weight of the bridge, 120 tonnes, is supported by the four main suspension cables, each with a diameter of 65 mm. Two lateral stabilising cables hold the bridge in position. The bridge can operate in winds of up to force 6 on the Beaufort scale.
